Gunflint Trail Book

It’s been a fun winter on the Gunflint Trail.  I’ve done some cross country skiing, downhill skiing, been helping on dog sled races, and even had the snowmobile out a few times.

I have also been able to finish up a project I have been working on for a year or so.  It started out as a joke, to a friend who is an amazing photographer.  I told her that her photos were worth putting out in a book.  Not long after, I joked that I’d do it then, I’d put out a book of my photographs!  And well, I did it!

It ended up being a fun project.  I wrote more than I thought I would, and it still contains over 70 pictures of the Gunflint Trail and the Grand Marais area.  Basically a few short stories of my life, experiences, and opinions of Cook county and the Boundary Waters area.

I just noticed today that it’s for sale on Amazon, and searchable under both title and author!  It’s been a fun learning experience.

Gunflint Trail

January 14, 2010

The Gunflint Trail and Grand Marais, MN area are truly beautiful this time of year.  Snow on the ground, frost on the trees, and NO bugs.  I really enjoy waking up with a cup of coffee in the morning while getting the wood stove going, over waking up to the sound of mosquitos still on the [...]

Future moisture problem

January 5, 2010

Here are 2 more photo’s of things to watch out for.  Another window that is now in trouble of future moisture problems because of the garage addition, and when the shingles were added or replaced, they didn’t flash them to the main house in a very good way to keep the rain water flowing down [...]

Soft floors

January 1, 2010

I have seen entry floors so rotten that they flex and sag greatly when walked on.  Even on houses that are only a few years old.  There is a slight bit of bounce and flex allowed in floors, but if you have noticeable movement in your floors, you have a problem.  Bathroom and entry door [...]

Good Returns

December 26, 2009

Head-Line News just said that even though many people are not getting the same  % increase in home value as in past years , a few areas of home improvements do still have good return values.
New high-end steel entry doors had around 128% re-sale return on investment.  High quality siding, and new decks were also among [...]

Window ideas when remodeling

December 19, 2009

Several times I have seen additions added to homes that maybe shouldn’t have been, or should have been built on a little differently.  In our nothern Minnesota climate the weather really needs to be taken into account.  Rain and snow are both big concerns.  Hopefully there is a photo attached here of a garage roof [...]

Save Labor

December 2, 2009

Labor is often the biggest cost  in a construction project.  One thing I have found that helps out cutting down on the ammount of labor is using  Pre- Finished products.
We have used pre-finished flooring, siding, and interior tongue and groove woods.  I have been impressed with the quality of the majority of these products.  [...]

Compare Apples to Apples when getting Estimates

November 16, 2009

We do quite a few re-roofing jobs throughout the year and recently had an interesting one.
When we started the tear-off of the old shingles this morning we found there was no tar paper under a lot of the shingles.  The attached garage had no tar paper on it at all.  The house had sporadic areas of [...]

Moral Hazzards

November 12, 2009

I turned on the TV tonight and these were the first words I heard.  I am very anit-bailout.  I don’t understand why we as a country would support failure,  so these words caught my attention very quickly.

“I think the biggest moral hazzard;    the whole issue of moral hazzard-that people are not going to work hard [...]
